Congratulations. Your candidate won. In lieu of this, I hope you’ve prepared a speech to the women, LBGTQ+, and minorities in your life as to why they don’t matter.
Countless times, to be President, Trump has painted himself as a misogynist, saying things such as Hillary Clinton plays the “woman card” (never mind that it guarantees to get you a discounted salary and stronger chances of sexual assault); that if his daughter was sexually harassed at work, he’d hope she would just quit (forget fighting back); that ranking women’s looks is all fun and games (even if it encourages bulimia and anorexia). In addition to this, he’s quoted as tweeting “26,000 unreported sexual assults in the military-only 238 convictions. What did these geniuses expect when they put men & women together?” Of course, it’s the women’s fault because who doesn’t know that the willingness to die for your country comes with forfeiting the right to say no?
In addition to Trump’s misogyny, he’s also clearly a racist. Trump is known for wanting to build a giant wall between Mexico and the United States. Alright, cool. Build your wall. But what about legal Hispanics that live and work in the US? Those who have become citizens, either by birth or choice. Trump has been sighted implying that a federal judge, Gonzalo Curiel, was not fair in a case against Trump University because “He’s a Mexican.” Trump goes on to say “We’re building a wall between here and Mexico. The answer is, he is giving us very unfair rulings – rulings the people can’t even believe.” Forget that in the late ’90s Curiel was chasing Mexican drug cartels. Trump’s company has been sued twice for not renting to black people by the Justice Department, calls Mexican immigrants “criminals” and “rapists” and still questions Obama’s authenticity of birth. WHAT?!
But don’t fear, he couldn’t possibly be racist after all this. After all, he’s also been quoted as saying “I have a great relationship with the blacks,” and “I love the Muslims. I think they’re great people.”
Trump’s running mate, Mike Pence, now VP, had his run in Indiana as governor. Here he passed such bills as RFRA, Religious Freedom Restoration Act, where businesses can openly deny patronage to members of the LGBTQ+ community as they deem appropriate. This bill makes it legal for people in Indiana to publicly discriminate against those it chooses.
With all of this, in addition to more racist, misogynistic comments, Donald J. Trump has achieved United States Presidency. So, please be prepared to tell your wives, daughters and other women in your life why their lives don’t matter to you. Be ready to explain why you voted for a man that perpetuates rape culture, believes that pregnancy is an inconvenience to a work place, finds breast feeding revolting and wants to deny women their right to choose. Please also explain to those in your life that belong to the LBGTQ+ community and minorities why you voted for a president that will leave them in undeniable fear for the next four years.
Just please be ready for the change, for better, or for worse, that is coming to those you say you love.
