Charlie Kelly & The Wardrobe Of A Wild Card

“I’m gonna rise up. I’m gonna kick a little ass. Gonna kick some ass in the USA. Gonna climb a mountain. Gonna sew a flag. Gonna fly on an Eagle. I’m gonna kick some butt. I’m gonna drive a big truck. I’m gonna rule this world. Gonna kick some ass. Gonna rise up. Kick a little ass. Rock, flag, and eagle!”Charlie Kelly (Season 2, Episode 9: Charlie Goes America All Over Everybody’s Ass)

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia is one of the shows that is in my binge watch rotation (it joins Parks and Recreation, The Office, and Community). I have lost count how many times I have watched it. There’s something so watchable about the gang. It’s not that I can really see myself in any of them (well, I don’t know, my best friend likes to call me Bird a lot, but he’s a dick). I would never hang out with these people, but you can’t look away from the cringe-worthy situations they get themselves involved with. Each person in the gang serves a purpose but today, we are going to discuss Charlie Kelly, the Wild Card.

I was watching the episode, “The Gang Hits The Road”, and Charlie outwardly admits that he’s never been outside of Philadelphia. It makes sense if you think about other elements of his personality: liking to kill rats with sticks, eating pears with stickers still attached, being illiterate, not picking up on social cues, the list goes on. He was very obviously a sheltered child. I mean, the sixth season Christmas episode, “A Very Sunny Christmas” showcases this perfectly, where we see a young Charlie getting Christmas presents from various men that go upstairs to sleep with his mom. He’s still a very sheltered, naive adult. I buy all of that; however, have you ever noticed that whenever Charlie isn’t wearing his iconic badass sleeptime wear (see featured image) or sporting his favorite green army jacket, he’s usually wearing shirts with locations on them? He’s either living a total lie or he just shops exclusively at thrift shops. I could see either of those being the case.

Red Hook is located in Brooklyn, so we are definitely getting closer to Philadelphia with this shirt, but Brooklyn is still outside of Philadelphia.

Oregon T-Shirt

Another state shirt. Also on the other side of the map from Philadelphia.

Lake Tahoe T-Shirt

Lake Tahoe is a lake that straddles the border of Nevada and California. You can’t really see Lake Tahoe on this shirt, but the spaghetti is more important. While we’re on the topic, what’s your spaghetti policy here?

Bonus: “Wildcard bitches, yeeeeeehaaaaa!”
