At first glance, Halsey may seem like just another hip female vocalist.
I definitely thought this upon listening to the catchy “New Americana” when it first slinked onto the radio. Her vocals on the track don’t seem anything to scream about, but upon further inspection, you’ll find much more than just another “I’m trying to be unique” mainstream sensation. I first listened to “Badlands” at about 5 a.m. while battling yet another case of insomnia. I happened upon the brilliance of “Colors” first. The intrigue didn’t stop until about 7 a.m. after at least a few listens to the same songs to be able to fully understand the depth of the words. The entirety of “Badlands” is like this deep introspective look inside a sexually frustrated woman who is both a ticking time bomb and a natural disaster. You just want to get to know this person and understand her story.
Needless to say, I am now a Halsey fan. I thought I would grace you with my five favorite tracks from Badlands that I feel fully grasp what type of artist Halsey is.
“You can’t wake up, this is not a dream,
You’re part of a machine, you are not a human being,
With your face all made up, living on a screen,
Low on self esteem, so you run on gasoline.”
- “Roman Holiday”
“Cause I imagine the weight of your ribs
If you lied between my hips in the backseat”
“I don’t like them innocent
I don’t want no face fresh
Want them wearing leather
Begging, let me be your taste test”
“I’m headed straight for the castle
They wanna make me their queen
And there’s an old man sitting on the throne that’s saying that I probably shouldn’t be so mean”
“You were a vision in the morning when the light came through
I know I’ve only felt religion when I’ve lied with you”
